Abstract
This retrospective study aimed to identify characteristics and mortality risk factors among 3,190 adults aged 65 and over who visited an emergency departments (ED) located in an urban and rural complex city during the winter season of 2016. Data were collected through electronic medical records between May 1 and July 30, 2017. Chi square test and logistic regression were applied using SPSS 22.0. Study participants aged 75 and over comprised 61.9% and women comprised 52.9% of the total. Among the participants, 80% lived with their family members, 10.5% resided in a long-term care (LTC) facility and 9.5% lived alone. Those who visited the ED during the daytime were 59.9% and 37.8% of the participants were classified as non-emergent while 7% were as urgent. Among the older adults visiting the ED, those who visited the ED by ambulance (OR=3.287), those aged 85 and over (OR=3.168), those who were transferred from a LTC facility (OR=2.897), those without hypertension (OR=2.536) and those who lived in Chuncheon (OR=2.377) represented higher risk of mortality than their counterparts. As older adults living alone or transferred from a LTC facility visit a ED more often than now, strategies will be needed to reduce non-emergent ED visits and intervene their prevalent health problems.
